This city was built at the beginning of the Hellenistic Period as an important military colony to protect lower Euphrates. The rectangular ground-plan of the city clearly shows the Hellenistic impact.

Dura Europos offers a fascinating insight into the early art of Christian and Jewish tradition. Visiting Dura Europos comprises an overwhelming range of monuments of pagan, Semitic, Christian and Jewish religious devotion.

Examples for the archaeological treasures from Dura are exhibited in renowned museums all over the world, e.g. in the Yale University Museum in the United States or in the Louvre in Paris. Also absolutely worth-seeing: the 1800 years old synagogue from Dura Europos exhibited in the National Museum in Damascus, and its frescoes representing persons in scenes from the old Testament.
