Like other Arab fortresses dating from that time, Qala'at Jaber benefited from its elevated situation and was surrounded by thick walls and a moat.

The fortress watched over a major crossing-point on the Euphrates and, in esthetic terms, tremendously benefited from the Assad Reservoir reaching its basements.

This elevation is now an island connected with the mainland by a coated road. From the castle, you can enjoy a wonderful view over the smooth, large surface of the  Assad Reservoir and its deep blue water.
