St. Simeon

Ugarit

In Arabic language also known as Qala’at Sama’an. The monastery is named after the hermit Saint Simeon who lived for 37 years in complete isolation on a platform on top of a pillar.

After his death, the hill where he had lived became a frequently visited place of pilgrimage for the faithful from the Byzantinian world. In the fifth century, a cathedral was built in honour of St. Simeon. It comprised a huge cross-shaped basilica built exactly above Simeon's pillar, as well as chapels, a monastery, a baptistery, and hotels surrounding the church.

From St. Simeon monastery, one enjoys a wonderful view over the fertile plain of the limestone mountains where the hill rises.
