Tartus is a city founded by the Phoenicians and fortified as typical crusader colony: donjon, citadel and town-wall lay on the shore as the sea-port ensured the city's provisions.

Tortosa was a famous place of Mary pilgrimage; visit of the former Notre Dame cathedral, now a museum. 

Depending on weather conditions, option of a half-an-hour boat trip to the offshore island Arwad named in antiquity Arados; in the time of the crusades, it was the last station of the Francs and fell under Islamic rule only in 1302.
